Robert & Bernice Milam
The Robert and Bernice Milam Scholarship was transferred to The Foundation in 2010 from Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church. The scholarship benefits active members of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church or Stone Creek Church.
Robert Lee Milam, son of David Milam and Nettie Hardy Milam, was born November 7, 1911 in Keeling, Virginia. He lived most of his life in the Pittsylvania County and Danville area. He served in the United States Navy during World War II with the shore patrol and retired from the military service in 1949. Prior to his service in the Navy, he was employed with the City of Danville as a firefighter. He was a member of the American Legion Post 325, Disabled Chapter #19 Disabled American Veterans and Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church. Robert died July 28, 2000.
Bernice Shelton Milam, daughter of Howard Shelton and Willie Saunders Shelton, was born June 5, 1915 in Gretna, Virginia. She lived most of her life in Danville, retiring from Dan River, Inc #8 Gray Inspection with over 30 years of service. She was a member of Third Avenue Congregation Christian Church. Bernice died May 16, 2008.
Robert and Bernice were married on November 10, 1933. They did not have children of their own but wanted to help the children of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church with their higher education.
