Judge Spiros B. Skenderis

The Spiros Skenderis Scholarship was established with The Community Foundation by the Danville Bar Association in memory of Judge Skenderis. The scholarship benefits Danville-Pittsylvania County graduates who have overcome a hardship.

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Judge Spiros Skenderis was educated in Danville Public Schools and graduated from the University of Virginia. He received his law degree from Washington and Lee University. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army. He worked in private practice until 1965, when he became Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for the City of Danville. In 1970, he was appointed judge for the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Spiros Skenderis was a compassionate judge for a period of nineteen years. During this time, he was focused on improving scholastic achievement and building character in the young people who appeared before him. At the time of his death in 1989 (at the age of 57), he was serving as Secretary of the Virginia Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts of Virginia. Judge Skenderis was the co-founder of the Danville area Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was a member and officer of the Saint Peter’s Greek Orthodox Church.
